Sometimes a carpet repair has already been attempted before we arrive.
In this Calgary home, the carpet stair nosing had previously been repaired by the tenant. The intention was good, but stair nosing is one of the highest-wear areas of a carpeted staircase. A temporary repair may hold for a while, but it needs to be properly secured and finished to withstand everyday foot traffic.
What Was Wrong With the Stair Nosing?
The carpet around the front edge of the stair had come apart, exposing the wood and the previous fastening underneath.
Rather than trying to improve the existing repair, I opened the area back up so I could see exactly what had been done and rebuild it properly.

Rebuilding the Stair Edge Properly
Once everything was exposed, the previous repair was removed and the stair nosing was redone from the underlying structure outward.
The goal wasn’t simply to make the damaged area look better for a photograph. The repair needed to be permanent, secure and properly finished.
Stair nosings take considerable abuse because every trip up and down the stairs puts pressure on that front edge. How the carpet is secured underneath matters just as much as how the finished surface looks.
The Finished Carpet Repair
After rebuilding and securing the area, the carpet was properly fitted around the stair nosing and the repair was carefully finished.

The result is a clean, professional finish with the stair edge properly secured again.
This is exactly why we say:
Don’t Replace It, If We Can Fix It.
A damaged stair doesn’t necessarily mean replacing the staircase carpet. In many cases, an experienced carpet repair technician can rebuild the damaged section and extend the life of the existing carpet.
Can a Damaged Carpet Stair Nosing Be Repaired?
Yes. Depending on the condition of the carpet and the underlying stair, damaged or loose carpet around a stair nosing can often be repaired without replacing all of the carpet.
The important part is determining why it failed in the first place and correcting that problem rather than simply covering it up.
Do You Repair Previous DIY Carpet Repairs?
Absolutely. We regularly encounter carpet that has previously been patched, glued, stapled or otherwise repaired.
If a previous repair hasn’t held, send us a few clear photos. We can usually tell you whether it can be properly repaired.
