Carpet Stretching Isn’t Always the Solution
Most wrinkled or loose carpet can be corrected with professional power stretching. However, before stretching any carpet, we first need to determine how the carpet was originally installed.
On this job, the hallway appeared to need a straightforward carpet stretch.
Once I started inspecting the installation, I discovered something that made a proper stretch impossible.
The Problem: The Carpet Was Heavily Stapled to the Floor
The original installer had used a large number of staples to secure the carpet directly to the floor.
This is important because carpet needs to be able to move toward the perimeter during the stretching process. Normally, the carpet is stretched under tension and secured onto the tack strips around the edges of the room.
In this hallway, the excessive stapling was preventing that movement.
Watch the video below to see what I found during the inspection.
Why I Wouldn’t Simply Stretch It Anyway
Trying to force a power stretch without addressing all of those attachment points would not be the proper way to repair the carpet.
A professional carpet repair isn’t just about making the wrinkles disappear temporarily. We need to understand why the carpet became loose and whether the existing installation will allow the repair to be performed correctly.
In this case, the original installation method was the real problem.
Sometimes the Best Repair Is Knowing When to Stop
At CarpetFix, we would rather explain the problem to a homeowner than perform a repair that we don’t believe can be done properly.
If your carpet is wrinkled, buckled or becoming loose, it doesn’t necessarily mean the carpet needs replacing. In many cases, professional carpet stretching can restore it.
But occasionally, as this job demonstrates, the original installation itself has to be addressed first.
