Basement Carpet Water Damage: Why Removing the Underlay Around a Pool Table Can Make the Repair Harder

he pool table made it impossible to properly access the entire affected area.

A Calgary homeowner recently contacted CarpetFix after a water-line leak on the main floor sent water down into the basement.

Unfortunately, the leak wasn’t discovered immediately, and a fairly large section of the basement carpet became soaked.

Trying to prevent further damage, the homeowner pulled the carpet back and removed as much of the wet underlay as they could reach.

There was just one major obstacle:

A large pool table was sitting in the middle of the room.

The homeowner was hoping the existing carpet could be saved, new underlay installed, and the carpet put back down without having to move the pool table.

The Carpet May Still Be Reusable

One of the first questions after water damage is whether the carpet itself needs to be replaced.

Not necessarily.

Depending on the source of the water, how long everything remained wet, the condition of the carpet and backing, and whether the carpet can be properly dried and cleaned, it may be possible to save and reinstall the existing carpet.

That’s why I generally don’t like seeing otherwise usable carpet automatically thrown away after a water incident.

Don’t replace it, if we can fix it.

The Bigger Problem Was the Underlay

In this particular case, the homeowner hadn’t neatly cut the damaged underlay into removable sections.

They understandably pulled and tore out whatever wet material they could reach.

That left irregular, jagged sections of old underlay underneath the rolled-back carpet and around the pool table.

And that’s where the job became considerably more difficult.

Why I Wish the Underlay Hadn’t Been Pulled Out

My response to the homeowner was essentially:

“I wish you hadn’t pulled the underlay out. Now we need to move the pool table so I can expose the floor and repair it properly.”

That isn’t because removing wet material was a bad idea in itself. Getting wet materials dried quickly is important.

The problem is that once sections of underlay have been torn away in areas that can’t be fully accessed, I’m left with an incomplete and irregular edge underneath the carpet.

I don’t want to simply push new underlay underneath the carpet and hope everything lines up.

If I’m going to repair it, I want to be able to see what I’m working with.

Can You Just Work Around the Pool Table?

Sometimes we can work around large furniture.

A pool table is different.

It is extremely heavy, takes up a large portion of the room and makes accessing the carpet and underlay underneath it very difficult.

In this situation, because the underlay had already been partially removed, the floor needed to be properly exposed.

That means the pool table has to be moved sufficiently to give access to the affected area.

Only then can I determine exactly where the old underlay ends, remove anything else that needs to come out and install the replacement underlay correctly.

Why Proper Underlay Installation Matters

Underlay isn’t simply something we hide underneath the carpet.

The replacement pieces need to fit correctly without unnecessary gaps, overlaps or poorly supported areas.

Once the underlay is dealt with, the existing carpet can potentially be laid back into position and properly stretched onto the existing tack strips, provided the carpet and the rest of the installation are still suitable for reuse.

The homeowner had also mentioned that the existing tack strips were still in place, which can be helpful if they’re dry, secure and in usable condition.

What Should You Do If Your Basement Carpet Gets Soaked?

Every water-damage situation is different, but there’s an important lesson from this job:

Before cutting, tearing or removing large sections of carpet or underlay, consider contacting a carpet repair professional.

There are certainly situations where wet material needs to come out quickly. But if you’re hoping to save the existing carpet, a quick conversation or a few photographs can sometimes help determine the best way to open the carpet while making the eventual repair easier.

And if there’s a pool table, built-in cabinet or another large object in the affected area, mention it before starting.

It can completely change how the repair needs to be approached.
