Several walls had been removed during the renovation, leaving long gaps and exposed areas throughout the existing carpet. The carpet itself was still in usable condition, so replacing the entire basement carpet simply because of the missing sections would have been unnecessary.
Instead, we repaired the affected areas, reconstructed the missing carpet sections, reinstalled the existing carpet and restored the floor.

When an interior wall is removed, the carpet usually does not continue underneath it. Once the framing and drywall are gone, a strip of exposed floor can be left behind.
This project was more challenging than repairing one small gap. Several sections had to be addressed, including long runs and areas where the repair changed direction around the former walls.
The goal was to preserve as much of the original carpet as possible while rebuilding the missing areas properly.

The Challenge – Reconnecting Existing Carpet
Carpet repair after a renovation is not simply a matter of filling an empty space with another piece of carpet.
The existing carpet has already been cut around the original walls. After those walls are removed, the remaining pieces may have different edges, directions and tension.
For a proper repair, we needed to evaluate the location and shape of the missing carpet, the condition of the existing carpet and underlay, where new seams could be positioned, carpet pile direction and alignment, and how the carpet could be re-tensioned and secured.
This is why renovation carpet repair can involve a combination of carpet patching, seam work, underlay work and carpet stretching rather than one simple patch.

Sections of the existing carpet were carefully released and folded back to provide access to the repair area. This allowed us to work with the existing carpet rather than simply covering the gaps from above.
The repair involved preparing the affected areas, adding the necessary carpet material, creating and securing new seams, and repositioning the existing carpet.
Once the repair sections were completed, the carpet could be put back into position and properly secured.
Why Not Replace the Entire Carpet?
This is one of the most important questions homeowners should ask after a renovation.
If the existing carpet is still in good condition, missing carpet where a wall was removed does not automatically mean the entire room needs new carpet.
Professional carpet repair may be an option when walls, closets, cabinets, built-ins or other structures have been removed.
The decision depends on the condition of the existing carpet, the size and location of the gaps, and whether suitable matching carpet is available.
Sometimes replacement makes more sense. But when a practical repair is possible, keeping the existing carpet can avoid unnecessary material, expense and disruption.

Can Carpet Be Repaired After Removing a Wall?
Yes. In many cases, carpet can be repaired after an interior wall is removed. The missing strip where the wall used to sit can often be filled with suitable donor carpet and professionally joined to the existing carpet. The final result depends on the carpet’s condition, pile, age, colour and the quality of the available donor material.
How Do You Fill the Carpet Gap Where a Wall Used to Be?
The repair can involve preparing the exposed area, replacing or adding underlay where necessary, fitting suitable carpet into the missing section, creating secure seams and restoring proper carpet tension. Larger or irregular renovation gaps may require several carefully planned repair sections.
Do I Have to Replace My Carpet After Removing Walls?
Not necessarily. If the surrounding carpet is still in good condition and suitable donor carpet is available, repairing the gaps can often be much more practical than replacing carpet throughout the entire room or basement.
This is one reason we recommend having the damaged area assessed before deciding that complete carpet replacement is the only option.
Where Do You Get Matching Carpet for a Renovation Repair?
Leftover carpet from the original installation is normally the best option because the style and colour are already very close. If no leftover carpet is available, it may sometimes be possible to use donor carpet from a closet or another inconspicuous location.
Even carpet from the same manufacturer and colour can look different after the existing carpet has been exposed to years of traffic, cleaning and sunlight, so the available donor material should be assessed before deciding on the repair.
Will the Carpet Repair Be Invisible?
It depends on the carpet and the donor material.
Some repairs can blend extremely well, while others may remain slightly visible. Carpet age, wear, colour variation, pile direction, lighting and donor-carpet condition can all affect the finished appearance.
We prefer to explain the expected result before doing the repair rather than promise that every patch will be completely invisible.
Can Large Carpet Gaps After a Renovation Be Repaired?
Sometimes, yes. A long or irregular gap does not automatically rule out repair.
Larger projects require more planning because seam locations, carpet direction, tension and available donor material all have to work together.
Clear photos are usually the best first step in determining whether the existing carpet can be repaired.
